Crafting an Award-Winning Fragrance for Bath & Body Works

“Winning the 2018 FIFI Award in the Consumer’s Choice Women’s category for At The Beach was a career highlight and one of the most challenging projects I’ve taken on. The fragrance is special to me because it was inspired by my time at Ortley Beach in New Jersey. Being immersed in the fresh air, salty water, and the scent of suntan lotion, shaped the creation process.”

“My first thought was Sandalwood, which is a material I’ve always loved, its presence resonates from top to base.”

Watch The Interview

OnScent Master Perfumer, Jerry Caiazzo interviewed by OnScent Chief Marketing Officer, Chris L. Fuentes.

The Start of Caiazzo's Career

Chris Fuentes: You came out of college in the late 70s, tell me about that.

Jerry Caiazzo: After I graduated from Pace University with a Chemistry degree, I saw an ad in the New York Times for an Odor Chemist position. That was back when they posted jobs in the newspaper! It ended up being Givaudan, one of the largest makers of fragrance in the world. I was given an odor test, where I matched different citrus oils and that’s how I landed my first job.

Designing Award-Winning Scents

Fuentes: You’ve been in the industry for a long time. What are some projects that stand out?

Caiazzo: My favorite account was Bath & Body Works. We worked on their fragrance, At The Beach, which won a Consumer’s Choice FIFI Award in 2018. The inspiration came from spending summers at Ortley Beach in New Jersey and smelling the fresh air, salt water, and suntan lotion.

The Axe fragrances for Unilever also stand out to me. The biggest fragrance we hit on was Axe Dark Temptation because it instantly became a classic in men’s fragrance.

How A Perfumer Identifies Scent

Fuentes: What’s the process of identifying and layering scents?

Caiazzo: Scents are broken down into categories (like citrus) and those are broken down into sub-categories (like lemon). It starts with first breaking down these categories and then eventually being able to smell the difference.

You’d be surprised how difficult it can be when, for example, orange, mandarine and grapefruit contain a lot of the same components. At first, it takes trial and error and then you eventually learn the differences.

Celebrating Decades of Scent Design

Fuentes: What has changed over the past four decades and what do you love today?

Caiazzo: If you take a classic fragrance from the 2000’s and smelled it today, you’d be amazed at how different it smells. It’s a gradual thing so you won’t recognize it until you look at it over the time.

Today, I’m honored to be named a Master Perfumer for OnScent and to design their signature scent, OnScent One. People always ask me what I love about custom scent design and, for me, it’s the competition. I love being in the game, up against the best perfumers in the world.
