What does it take to create a new company from multiple entities through mergers?

Achim Daub: Building a new company out of different entities through mergers requires a complete business transformation, and there are several key aspects to this.

First, there’s the physical transformation. You need to consider the logistics of having multiple sites and think about what your future footprint will look like.

Next is digital transformation—this is all about systems. Different companies use different systems, so you have to think about how to integrate them and plan for your digital landscape going forward.

Finally, there’s functional transformation. Companies have different processes for achieving similar results, and now you need to align everyone around a single, unified core process across the entire organization.

All of this brings about a tremendous amount of change in a short period, which naturally leads to elevated anxiety among team members. As a leadership team, it’s essential to address those concerns, listen, and offer solutions.

For me, it starts with painting a clear picture of what things will look like once we’re through this transformation. There has to be a bright future on the other side—one that makes the current challenges worth enduring.

What’s most important during a business transformation like this?

First, stay close to your team. Listen to their concerns and involve them in decisions that will impact their work environment.

Second, stay focused on execution. Ask plenty of questions, and don’t hesitate to ask about things you don’t fully understand—no one is an expert in everything.

Lastly, stay close to your customers. You need to take them on this journey with you. Their interests should guide your approach, and it’s critical to understand how these changes will affect them, both now and in the future.
